2023: Disregard fake news, I am still in gubernatorial race – Oyo Senator, Folarin to APC

A member of the National Assembly, Senator Teslim Folarin has said that he is still in the gubernatorial race on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2023 elections.

Folarin who represents Oyo Central senatorial district made this disclosure on Tuesday.

Our correspondent reports that Folarin is one of the gubernatorial aspirants of APC in the state.

The lawmaker said the need to voice out became necessary due to a rumour that he has been asked to shelve his ambition.

Our correspondent gathered that some online media had reported that the lawmaker has been told by the APC leaders in Abuja to back out of the gubernatorial race.

Folarin in his reaction said he was still very active in the race to secure the governorship ticket of APC on Thursday.

Folarin while describing the rumour as the handiwork of his political enemies, enjoined members of the party to disregard the news he called “fake news”.

He said, “The news is a sponsored fake news aimed at misleading the people of Oyo State, teeming members of our great party (APC) and my teeming supporters across the length and breadth of our state.

“I want to disclaim that there was no instruction handed down to me by any person, group of persons or the highest hierarchy of our great party.

“I am actively in the race and will undoubtedly get the majority votes of our party delegates on Thursday, 26th May 2022 to become 2023 Oyo APC governorship flag-bearer.

“To this end, I enjoin members of our great party and supporters to disregard the fake news and entertain no fear. With God on our side, I’ll not only win the 2023 governorship ticket of our great party but also defeat the ruling PDP in the 2023 general elections”.

3150 people paid for my APC presidential form, one man donated yams– former minister, Nwajiuba

Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, a presidential hopeful, says about 3,150 Nigerians contributed money to purchase his N100 million All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential nomination form.

The expression of interest form costs N30 million while the nomination form is N70 million.

Nwajiuba, a former minister of state for education, was the first presidential hopeful of the ruling party to secure his form.

Speaking in a chat with journalists in Abuja on Monday, Nwajiuba said he’s not sponsored by the bigwigs but by ordinary Nigerians.

“I must agree with you that we have a monetised politics, but I can assure you that we have a President Muhammadu Buhari elected who didn’t have money,” NAN quoted him as saying.

“I am only presenting myself to serve, I am not sponsored by the oil industry, so the only people who can sponsor me are Nigerians; 3,150 people made contributions and we bought these forms.

“I have members of the house of representatives from 1992 who endorsed me, even before they contributed money.

“Some have paid N1,000 each, one man from Nasarawa gave me 150 yams from his farm to sell, people are investing with the hope that there may be a new Nigeria.”

The former minister said he would abide by his party’s decision if the working committee of the APC opts for a consensus candidate.

He, however, said the recent meeting by the south-east presidential hopefuls didn’t result in choosing a consensus candidate.

He said the region is not short of capable and intelligent minds that can lead the country.

“The south-east does not want to arrive at a consensus. The south-east wants to work with Nigerians,” he said.

“We have only seven presidential aspirants from the south-east in the APC and that is very small, but I am sure out of these seven, we have those in their 70s and in their 60s.

“We have those in their 50s, we have every type you need. Nigeria must have the full breadth of Igbo diversity.

“Any type you need, Igbo people have it, so what we said yesterday was that anyone that is chosen, we are going to back him or her.”

An All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential aspirant, Rochas Okorocha has allegedly been held hostage.

Okorocha made the remark in reaction to the presence of operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in his Abuja residence.

On Tuesday, EFCC operatives besieged the Imo West Senator’s residence in the Maitama area of Abuja.

Okorocha in reaction to their presence claimed the men of the anti-graft agency invaded his residence without a warrant of arrest.

Speaking with Channels Television, Okorocha said: “I am under hostage I would say, the EFCC is at my house both the back and the front.

“I would say, I have enquired if they have an arrest warrant nothing, and I am supposed to be getting ready for screening.

“I don’t know what is really happening, It is unfortunate that this is happening here.”

Okorocha vowed to hold a press conference on the matter, adding that EFCC banned journalists from gaining access into his house.

“I am trying to address a press conference, Of course, the EFCC cannot stop the press from coming into my premises. They are inside my compound but the press is coming inside my house to interview me, they can’t stop them, he insisted,” he said.

When asked if he would be submitting himself to the anti-graft agency, the presidential aspirant said, “I’ll be here until I know what it is, because this is something serious, I want to see an arrest warrant or a court order”, he added.

Operatives of the anti-graft agency stormed Okorocha’s residence on Tuesday, barricading it, and ensuring that none of the members of Okorocha’s family would be allowed to leave the compound until they produce the former governor.

Ongoing Battle With EFCC

The EFCC had filed a 17-count charge to the tune of N2.9 billion against Senator Okorocha. in late January.

Okorocha, in the charges filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, was accused of conspiring with others, including a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and five companies to steal from the public coffers.

Others listed as respondents to the suit were Anyim Nyerere Chinenye, Naphtali International Limited, Perfect Finish Multi Projects Limited, Consolid Projects Consulting Limited, Pramif International Limited, and Legend World Concepts Limited.

The charges were filed about the same time Senator Okorocha was declaring his intention to run for the office of the president in 2023.

The accused persons were alleged to have stolen the said amount belonging to Imo State and local government areas in the state in contravention of the Money Laundering Act 2011.

The charges claimed that the stolen funds were diverted between October 2014 and February 2016 from the Imo State Government House’s account and Imo State Joint Local Government Project’s account.

Meanwhile, a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State would ask the EFCC to stop further action against Senator Okorocha until the determination of the case before it.

Senator Okorocha had through his lawyer, Ola Olanipekun (SAN) approached the Federal High Court presided over by Justice Stephen Pam to seek the enforcement of some orders, earlier made in his favour in a case between him and the anti-graft agency.

The court also prohibited the EFCC from investigating or carrying out any other action against the former governor, while asking the anti-graft agency to release his international passport and travel documents.

When I’m president, we will bomb terrorrists everyday – Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation and 2023 presidential aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has said that if he becomes president, he will ensure that terrorists and their hideouts are bombarded daily until they disappear into thin air.

Amaechi recalled how he tamed under six months the menace of militants and other criminal elements in the State when he was elected governor of Rivers State.

The former transport minister made the remark in Katsina on Monday, while canvassing for the support of delegates ahead of the forthcoming primaries to elect the APC flag-bearer for the office of the President come 2023.

Amechi said: “If you know Rivers State before I became the Governor, you will know there were serious cases of kidnappings and killings in the State that made oil companies move away, but in 6 months, I restored security.

“General Buratai (former Chief of Army Staff) was then a Brigade Commander, for six months I did not sleep. So I said, they too will not sleep. Until they left Rivers people to sleep, then me too, I started sleeping.

“That’s why anywhere I go for consultations with delegates, I go with Gen. Buratai and former Inspector General of Police, Abba Suleiman, who was the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State at the time and the former Chief of Air Staff, Sadique Abubakar who was Air Force commander in Rivers then. We were bombing them everyday until they ran away.”

On revamping the Nigeria economy, the former transport minister said “there is need to move back to agriculture and move from agriculture to industrialization and manufacturing.”

In response, Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State described Amaechi as a very hardworking and courageous person, noting that the former transport minister need not blow his trumpet but should allow them blow it for him.

Masari then went ahead to pinpoint the challenges bedeviling the State, primarily the issue of insecurity and the urgent need to rehabilitate displaced people as a result of banditry, calling on aspirants to have that at the back of their mind whenever they come to the State to seek support of its people.

Blasphemy: Drama as Abuja RCCG members stage protest with sealed lips

There was drama at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Central Parish) in Abuja on Sunday as members protested against the killing of Christians in Nigeria over alleged blasphemy with their lips sealed with sellotape.

The protest which took place after the Sunday service at the Central Parish in Wuse 2 area of Abuja was led by the Regional Pastor of the Parish who refused to give his name to journalists.

Another Pastor of the church said the decision not to speak on the protest was an “order from above.”

The protesters who declined to speak to journalists had their mouths sealed with sellotape claiming it was a silent protest against killings in the name of God.

A presidential aspirant for the 2023 election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is a member and Senior Pastor of the RCCG.

Some inscriptions on the placards carried by them included, ‘Stop the killing! God is watching’; ‘No killings in the name of religion’, ‘Don’t defend the indefensible’; and ‘Let’s live together in peace.’

The Christian Association of Nigeria had called for a nationwide protest over the gruesome killing of Deborah Samuel, a 200 Level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto by Muslim fundamentalists.

Some Muslim colleagues of Deborah alleged that she blasphemed their religion, for which she was stoned to death before setting her ablaze.

Banky W Wins PDP Ticket For House Of Reps

On Monday, Nigerian singer turned politician Bankole Wellington, popularly called Banky W, won the PDP primaries ticket to represent the party as the House of Representatives candidate in the upcoming 2023 elections.

Banky W is contesting for the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency seat and had earlier said he would patiently wait for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary election.

The music star won twenty-eight votes while his closest opponent scored three votes.

A total of 140 aspirants contest PDP tickets for the 40 seats in the Lagos State House of Assembly, while 85 candidates are vying for the state’s 24 House of Representatives seats.

Earlier, Banky W was the butt of internet jokes after following rumours that he had lost his primary election.

The keenly contested primaries began at 5 p.m. on Monday.

In a viral video, the votes of the primaries were counted and closely monitored by the delegates and members of the party.

Banky W first announced his decision to run for the House of Representatives back in November 2018. In the 2019 elections, he contested the House of Representatives seat under the Modern Democratic Party (MDP) but lost to Ibrahim Obanikoro of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The music star announced that he would be running for the House of Reps seat again in April 2022.

“We must engage with Nigeria where it is, not where we prefer it to be. In 2019, we planted the seed. In 2023, by the grace of God and with your support, we will win the seat. The time for just talking is over. It is time to #TalkAndDo. I hope I can count on you. We move,” he tweeted at that time.

Challenges

On Sunday, Banky W said he would patiently wait for the outcome of the Peoples Democratic Party primary election.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday, he gave the assurance while reacting to a delay in the commencement of the primary election.

He told NAN that he believed that the delay was to enable the party to get everything right.

“I think that is the reason for the delay; if it takes some more time, there is no problem. We will be here as long as it takes, and we shall stay here till the process is completed,” he said.

Mr Wellington also urged contestants for PDP tickets to accept the delegates’ will. He expressed optimism that the election would hold peacefully and orderly.

“We will all align with whoever has the ticket. You need two things to win: the grace of God and the will of the people. I am very optimistic that I have both, and at the end of the day, that will be clear for everyone to see, and we can move forward together,” he said.

Egunjobi Segun, contesting for Eti-Osa 1 Constituency in Lagos State House of Assembly, told NAN that the delay was unfortunate.

He noted that the time given by the party for the election was 8 a.m., saying that delegates had yet to arrive at the time of the report.

He expressed the hope of winning the election but said that the people’s will would prevail.

Ademola Oyede, also contesting for Eti-Osa Constituency 1, told NAN that logistics involved in mobilising electoral officers and others contributed to the delay in starting the primary election.

“We also have to consider Lagos traffic; yesterday, there was a downpour in the state. Whenever we start the process, we are confident that chosen contestants will reflect the people’s will,” Oyede said.
