Ethiopia unhappy over Abiy’s portrayal in Time 100 list

Mr Abiy said he would not enter dialogue with Tigray leaders until the rule of law is restored

Ethiopia says it is outraged with the way the US magazine, Time, depicted the country’s leader when it had announced the list of influential people of the year.

Time magazine has included Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Ethiopian-born US citizen and computer scientist Timnit Gebru in the latest list of 100 most influential people of 2022.

Time said Mr Abiy’s peace treaty with Eritrea ”planted the seeds for an Ethiopian civil war’.’ It also stated that Mr Abiy, together with Eritrea’s leader, ”launched a military campaign against” Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) leaders.

In a letter to the magazine Mr Abiy’s office said they are ”dismayed” with the way he has been represented as well as the portrayal over who started the country’s civil war.

It describes his depiction as a ”character assassination” and accuses it of echoing the narrative of the TPLF – the regional party that has been fighting federal troops in the north.

It has requested the magazine give an explanation. There has been no immediate comment from publication.

All warring parties have been accused human rights violations in Ethiopia’s civil war.

The conflict in Ethiopia started on 4 November 2020 when Mr Abiy ordered a military offensive against regional forces in Tigray after TPLF forces seized a federal military base.

2023: Disregard fake news, I am still in gubernatorial race – Oyo Senator, Folarin to APC

A member of the National Assembly, Senator Teslim Folarin has said that he is still in the gubernatorial race on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2023 elections.

Folarin who represents Oyo Central senatorial district made this disclosure on Tuesday.

Our correspondent reports that Folarin is one of the gubernatorial aspirants of APC in the state.

The lawmaker said the need to voice out became necessary due to a rumour that he has been asked to shelve his ambition.

Our correspondent gathered that some online media had reported that the lawmaker has been told by the APC leaders in Abuja to back out of the gubernatorial race.

Folarin in his reaction said he was still very active in the race to secure the governorship ticket of APC on Thursday.

Folarin while describing the rumour as the handiwork of his political enemies, enjoined members of the party to disregard the news he called “fake news”.

He said, “The news is a sponsored fake news aimed at misleading the people of Oyo State, teeming members of our great party (APC) and my teeming supporters across the length and breadth of our state.

“I want to disclaim that there was no instruction handed down to me by any person, group of persons or the highest hierarchy of our great party.

“I am actively in the race and will undoubtedly get the majority votes of our party delegates on Thursday, 26th May 2022 to become 2023 Oyo APC governorship flag-bearer.

“To this end, I enjoin members of our great party and supporters to disregard the fake news and entertain no fear. With God on our side, I’ll not only win the 2023 governorship ticket of our great party but also defeat the ruling PDP in the 2023 general elections”.

Kaduna-Abuja train attack: Shehu Sani reacts to bandits’ 7-day ultimatum to kill abducted passengers

Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to take the threat made by bandits who abducted the Abuja-Kaduna train passengers seriously.

Sani made the plea in a tweet via his Twitter handle on Tuesday.

He tweeted: “The threat made by the terrorists who abducted the Abuja-Kaduna train passengers that they will start “killing them in 7 days’ time” should be taken seriously.

“Similar threat was made and ignored two months ago with tragic consequences.”

It was earlier reported that terrorists who attacked and kidnapped the 28 March 2022 Abuja-Kaduna bound train passengers have threatened to, within seven days, start killing the passengers in captivity if their demands are not met.

They called the government to, as a matter of urgency, release their children allegedly kept in a Yola detention facility in Adamawa State.

Malam Tukur Mamu and Dan Iyan Fika, the spokesman of Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, were spoken to on the phone by the leaders of the terrorists.

The terrorists claimed that the Federal Government suspended the resumption of the train service because of their threats in the audio of the conversations between Malam Tukur Mamu and the leaders of the terrorists that executed the Abuja-Kaduna train attack.

Northern coalition warns against attacks on northerners, destruction of properties in S/East

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has bemoaned what it noted as “hate campaigns and propaganda” being conducted by certain interest groups in the South-East to carry out unprovoked evictions, attacks, killings, destructions of properties and other forms of violations against northerners in various parts of the region.

The CNG said it is particularly disturbed by the reports of the brutal murder of a mother and her four children for the only sin of being northerners, adding that other reports that some trucks conveying goods to the south were also set ablaze in Anambra at the weekend and the drivers and other occupants were killed, injured or disappeared without a trace.

The group, speaking through its spokesman, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman in a statement, said, “The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has taken stock of events unfolding in South-East Nigeria, noting especially, the unrelenting attacks and killings of northerners passing through or residing among Igbo communities as minorities.”

It said that there is a manifestation of a dangerous conspiracy of silence days after Sunday’s killing of the northerners without any provocation, saying that the story has not been told by any of the national print and broadcast media despite wide coverage by the social media with graphic photos of the mayhem and condemnation by security operatives, groups and individuals.

According to the statement, “We have watched and studied these events carefully and with considerable restraint and maturity, to the point of condoning and accommodating several unreasonable and unacceptable actions that have been perpetrated against Nigerians collectively, and northerners in particular.

“The intrinsic bias of the media and the double standards, hypocrisy and cowardice of regional, traditional, cultural, political and religious leaders from both the South and the North have become more glaring when they condemned the Deborah incident in Sokoto but conspiratorially and deliberately decline comments on the murderous activities of IPOB/ESN terrorists including the slaughter of a legislator.”

CNG explained that it also noted the deliberate attempt by the media and southern leaders to conceal the true identity of the murderous IPOB/ESN terrorists by concealing them as ‘unknown gunmen’ while in actual sense they are known.

It claimed that it is aware that the activities of the IPOB/ESN terror groups are supported morally and politically by the vast majority of Igbo elites, politicians, traditional rulers, business persons, and the larger population of this ethnic group, alleging that it is also a situation that feeds on the docility of the affrighted section of those who pose as Northern leaders today.

It stated that the North’s reticence in speaking out or taking action is not born of fear or ignorance of how to respond in kind, saying that those who tempt them should know that the North is no longer going to turn the other cheek.

“We, therefore, invite the attention of southern leaders, their Northern collaborators and the bankrupt section of the northern political elite and other authors of mindless violence and separatism who see it as their duty to actualise what their fathers started in 1966, to remember that people from other regions are residing and doing businesses all over the North and to warn them that we shall no longer be expected to turn the other cheek if northerners would not be protected wherever they live as minorities in particularly Nigeria,” the group said.

CNG warned media operators of an imminent boycott of patronage all over the North unless they change to being more restrained and balanced in their reporting of all situations in the country, particularly when matters coming from or affecting northerners are reported or commented on.

“We caution them to desist from and to eschew the slanted reporting of events with greater bias against a particular religious and ethnic group as is witnessed in the reporting of security situations recently,” the statement stated.

Blasphemy: Drama as Abuja RCCG members stage protest with sealed lips

There was drama at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Central Parish) in Abuja on Sunday as members protested against the killing of Christians in Nigeria over alleged blasphemy with their lips sealed with sellotape.

The protest which took place after the Sunday service at the Central Parish in Wuse 2 area of Abuja was led by the Regional Pastor of the Parish who refused to give his name to journalists.

Another Pastor of the church said the decision not to speak on the protest was an “order from above.”

The protesters who declined to speak to journalists had their mouths sealed with sellotape claiming it was a silent protest against killings in the name of God.

A presidential aspirant for the 2023 election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is a member and Senior Pastor of the RCCG.

Some inscriptions on the placards carried by them included, ‘Stop the killing! God is watching’; ‘No killings in the name of religion’, ‘Don’t defend the indefensible’; and ‘Let’s live together in peace.’

The Christian Association of Nigeria had called for a nationwide protest over the gruesome killing of Deborah Samuel, a 200 Level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto by Muslim fundamentalists.

Some Muslim colleagues of Deborah alleged that she blasphemed their religion, for which she was stoned to death before setting her ablaze.

The killing elicited international outcry while the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, imposed a 24-hour curfew on the metropolis to restore order.

Violence also erupted on Friday in Katangan area of Warji Local Government Area of Bauchi State over alleged blasphemy.

Trouble reportedly started in Bauchi following a social media post by a 40-year-old staff of the Medical Department Warji Local Government, Rhoda Jatau, which was considered blasphemous to Islam.

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Samson Ayokunle, however, instructed Christians in the country to be discreet in carrying out the protest in view of a threat by an unknown Islamic group to do a counter-protest.

He urged church leaders to do the protest by carrying placards within the premises of their local churches or CAN secretariats.

2023: Nigerian students storm APC secretariat, vow to shut down airports

Members of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, South West Zone D, on Monday, stormed the National Secretariat of All Progressives Congress, APC, Abuja, to protest against a petition and call by a group to disqualify the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun from running for the second term in office.

According to the protesters, a group had called for the prosecution and disqualification of the governor from contesting for a second term in office.

The students also vowed that they would not relent in the ongoing nationwide protest against the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), noting that the next phase of the protest would target the shutdown of airports and other sources of the Federal Government revenue until the strike is called off.

They also called on the Federal Government, particularly the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to ensure diligent prosecution of the arrested Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Mr Ahmed Idris.

Recall that Idris was arrested by EFCC in connection with the alleged diversion of funds and money laundering activities to the tune of N80 billion.

The students who were led by the NANS South West Coordinator, Comrade Adegboye Olatunji, and Chairman of NANS Ogun Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Comrade Kehinde Damilola Simeon, during the protest, asked APC leadership to clear Governor Abiodun to contest for re-election as Ogun State Governor.

The protesters wielded placards of various inscriptions saying the governor prioritized education in the state.

NANS South West Coordinator, Adegboye Olatunji, told newsmen that the students were led by their leaders to APC Secretariat to present their position to the leadership of APC and to dissociate themselves from the recently “sponsored and ill-motivated” protest against Dapo Abiodun.

“We call on the leadership of the All Progressive Congress to discountenance their frivolous petition and trash it because to us as students leaders of South West, they are an illegitimate group.

“May we equally use this opportunity to pass a vote of confidence on Prince Dr Dapo Abiodun, the Executive Governor of Ogun State, for his commitment and sacrifices towards education development in the State,” Olatunji said.

Speaking on the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Chairman of NANS Ogun JCC, Comrade Kehinde Damilola Simeon, called on the Federal Government to look into the plight of the lecturers and by extension the students who bear the brunt of the strike with the view to acceding to the demands of the Union.

He warned that the students would not relent in the ongoing protest until the strike is called off for campuses to be reopened to students, saying the South West students only broke from the nationwide protest to come on solidarity protest at the APC Secretariat.

He said: “We have been the ones at the forefront of protest against the strike by ASUU in the South West starting with the blockade of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway and Ijabu Ode-Ore road that was done last week.

“We have been leading the agitation that the Federal Government listens to the plight of ASUU. Our coming here today does not mean that we have sheathed our swords in the aspect of fighting for the rights of our lecturers and by extension, the generality of the Nigerian students. ASUU is asking for what is their right,” he said.

On the arrest of Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Mr Ahmed Idris, by EFCC, he said it was quite unfortunate and “a slap on the dignity of Nigeria as a nation when some lecturers are on strike for demands that are not even up to half of the money that one person is embezzling”.

Simeon said, “It’s high time the Federal Government takes up their responsibility and does what is right by using some of these people as examples to serve as a deterrent to others.

“The educational sector is suffering and UNESCO recommended that 26% of every nation’s budget should be spent on education but we are not near this in Nigeria.

“I can assure you that we will be back on the streets as soon as possible until our voices are heard and the Federal Government does the needful, we won’t relent. We are planning to see that all sources of revenue to the government, including Federal Government properties like airports will be shut down soon”.

2023: Osinbajo’s campaign visit to Zamfara insensitive – PDP

The Zamfara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that recent visit of the Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo to the State ahead of the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential primary was not justified.

This was disclosed to newsmen on Sunday by the State PDP deputy chairman, Prof. Kabiru Jabaka.

“Since all these killings in the State, the Vice President has not paid any condolence visit to commiserate with the people of the State and the relations of those affected by banditry activities in the State, but because of his presidential ambition, he rushed to the State.

“We cannot clap for him because he said that he discussed important issues with the leaders of the APC in the State for a way forward. The Vice President’s visit to the State at this critical moment where banditry has been the order of the day in the State is uncalled for.

“I expected him to visit the State and commiserate with us and not to visit the State for his presidential aspiration, because when we were in trouble, he pretended as if he did not know what was happening in Zamfara State,” he said.

According to Jabaka, over 20,000 Zamfara State secondary school students will not write their WAEC examination this year due to the insurgency that had become uncontrollable, pointing out that the visits of the Vice President to the State has no benefit to the entire people of the State.

“Zamfara state government could not settle over N1.2 billion WAEC and NECO examinations fees for our children this year and the issue of insecurity has become widespread across the State.

“It is surprising that at this critical moment, they used our resources to receive the Vice President for his presidential ambition.

The Vice President was in Zamfara State on Saturday where he held series of meetings with traditional rulers, APC State delegates and Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle behind closed-doors.

IPOB not good for us, they lie to our people – Gov Umahi warns, gives reason

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State says the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, should not be welcomed in the Southeast due to their negative activities.

The governor, who is also vying for the sole presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress, APC, stated this while playing host to leaders and members of the Nigeria Guild of Editors in Abakaliki at the weekend.

According to Umahi, the agitation by the secessionist group is unhealthy for the region, revealing that he had raised the alarm while still a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He explained that IPOB succeeded in deceiving the Igbos that the geo-political zone is infiltrated with strangers, alleging that they also engage in hate speech.

Umahi said, “There is extreme politics in this region and it must stop, when we started especially before my defection, we were all working together and I was championing it that IPOB is not good for us because of the kind of agitations that were being meted out was not correct.

“First hate-speeches and from there it developed to violence and they have continued to lie to our people that our place has been infiltrated, it is a lie, it is South East killing South East people and the security people and until we are bold to say this, it will continue”.

2023: APC will collapse if I emerge PDP presidential candidate – Tambuwal

Sokoto State Governor and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, at the weekend, said the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, will collapse if he emerges the presidential flag bearer of the opposition party.

Tambuwal made this known while addressing stakeholders and delegates of the PDP in Ebonyi State during his consultation visit.

He lamented that the APC government led by President Muhammadu Buhari has increased Nigeria’s problem to a greater percentage.

According to him: “By the grace of God, come May 29, 2023, PDP will take over the government house of Ebonyi State and the Aso-Rock Villa in Abuja.

“We want to win the election, and as such, we must remain united in Ebonyi and in Nigeria at large.

“We must nominate a candidate that knows the way. A candidate that has the capacity, competency and the credibility to win election along with other leaders and members of the party in Ebonyi and in Nigeria in general.

“We need a president that understands the executives and will not be doing trial and error because we have no time, this is because the problems in Nigeria are too many, that the president must start work on May 30, 2023.

“We need a president that has good character and temperament, that will be able to unite all Nigerians. The South East has been clamouring for the presidency of this country and it is the right thing to do,” he stated.

Earlier in his remark, the PDP chairman in Ebonyi State, Barr. Silas Onu, assured that the delegates from the state will vote wisely, and will support any presidential aspirant that has good character and temperament to unite party members and Nigerians in general.

He lamented that there is increased hunger, suffering among citizens and threats to lives of PDP members in the state, allegedly orchestrated by the APC government in Ebonyi State led by David Umahi.
